The organisation was set up as a way of helping
people from the troubled parts of the world, Russia, Iran, Middle
East and Africa and particularly Afghanistan. As a result of mental
and health problems that a significant number of these people have
developed because of torture, persecution, war, and loss of families
and friends, they find it very difficult to settle harmoniously
in the UK.
There was little support and culturally sensitive environment in
the community. Young people from the community we work with felt
discrimitated and isolated because of their refugee backgrounds.
After assessing the needs, particularly for the Afghans, it was
realised that there was a lack of support, information, social activits,
physical activites, interpretation, translation services in Afghan
languages and other general help and advice.
Afghan communities in the UK were not practicing
any sport activity. They had difficulties accessing mainstream services
because of language barriers and lack of friendly support and community
led services.
Our current estimates for the number of beneficiaries of EENGO services
is 1,000 people per year. The youth involved in our sport activities
are aged between 12 and 25 years.
